Enrollment Guide of 2014 Confucius Institute Scholarships

For the purpose of supporting the development of Confucius Institutes, facilitating international promotion of Chinese language and dissemination of Chinese culture, as well as cultivating qualified Chinese-language teachers and excellent Chinese-language learners, Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban launches a “Confucius Institute Scholarship” program to sponsor foreign students, scholars and Chinese language teachers to study Chinese in relevant universities of China. According to the relevant document issued by Hanban, the Application for Confucius Institute Scholarships 2014 has opened. Please see the details below:
1.Approved Scholarship Category and Places Available
The Approved Scholarship Categories in our university include the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) and Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL, which provide 10 places available for application.
2.Application Requirements
The scholarship of Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages is provided to outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), overseas local Chinese language teachers, outstanding performers on HSK exams, winners of the "Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, and outstanding graduates of Chinese language across the world for taking the MTCSOL degree. The scholarship winner shall begin the study in autumn 2014, and the grant will cover two academic years.
Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens in good health, aged between 18 and 35 (Chinese language teachers in post shall be aged below 45). Applicants are required to have bachelor degrees or its equivalent with a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) and a score of at least 50 on the HSKK (intermediate level), and make a written commitment stating that he/she will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation. Applicants with specific teaching posts arranged will be given admission priority (certification by the institution he/she will teach for is required). Hanban will provide support for outstanding graduates to return to their countries to teach.
The Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + MTCSOL is oriented at students from Confucius Institutes in Africa and Latin America regions, who are interested in Chinese Language teaching. The applicant shall sign an agreement with the Confucius Institute or an institute he/she will teach for.
The Applicant is required to have a bachelor degree or its equivalent and achieve a score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 3) and a score of at least 60 on the HSKK (primary level). Those who pass the first-academic-year assessment and score at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) can proceed with their study in China for the Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. Hanban will support graduates to teach Chinese in their home countries by recruiting them as local teachers, providing wage subsidies, etc.
3.Scholarship Coverage and Criteria
Scholarship winners are exempt from registration fees, tuition, fees for basic learning materials, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with a one-off resettlement subsidy, monthly allowance and comprehensive insurance for foreign students studying in China. The monthly allowance is CNY 1,700. The one-off resettlement subsidy is CNY 1,500, and it will not be provided to those who have studied in China for more than half a year before being enrolled.
4.Application Procedures
a.Applicants should log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website athttp://cis.chinese.cn,
b.Applicants should log on the application website of Shaanxi Normal University athttp://iso.snnu.edu.cn, set up an individual account, complete and submit relevant application materials and documents. Afterwards, please print the Application Form and sign your name.
c.Please post the above-mentioned forms and other required documents and materials (see 5.) to Shaanxi Normal University before April 30. No matter whether the applicants get admitted or not, the materials and documents will not be returned.
d.Applicants should regularly log on your account at the website of Confucius Institute Scholarship and Shaanxi Normal University to see how the application goes.
5.Application Materials
a.Photocopy of Passport Photo Page
b.Photocopy of HSK and HSKK Result Report
c.Notarized highest education diplomas attained or proof of study
d.Reference Letter and Letter of Commitment. The Master’s Degree Scholarship applicants are required to submit reference letters provided by two professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English). A written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation (written in Chinese and sign with signature). Applicants from the countries with no Confucius Institutes yet who majors in Chinese Language should attach a Reference Letter provided by the president of their school.
e.Applications under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.
f.Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students in China shall submit the scholarship certificate. Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Proficiency Competitions in their countries shall provide award proof and reference letter provided by the organizers.
g.Chinese language teachers shall submit certificate of employment and recommendation letters provided by institutes they work for.
6.Entrance and Annual Appraisal
a.Hanban/The Headquarters of Confucius Institute will inform our university the final admission results by mid of June.
b.The admission notice and other documents will be sent to the admitted students or the recommendation organizations in early July.
c.Admitted students should come to our university for register before the required deadline. Scholarships will not be kept for those who do not register on time without reasonable cause.
d.Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination.
e.Students for a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) shall be subject to an annual appraisal organized by our university before the end of the first school year after being enrolled according to the “Annual Appraisal Procedures for Confucius Institute Scholarship”. Only the eligible students are entitled to continue to receive the Scholarships in the following year.
