Founded in 1944, Shaanxi Normal University is a teachers’ university directly administered by the Ministry of Education and under the key construction of the state’s “211” Project. Presently, it has 19 schools and 2 basic courses departments, 61 undergraduate majors, 4 state’s key disciplines, 10 post-doctoral mobile research stations, 6 doctoral programs in the first level disciplines, 61 doctoral programs in the second level disciplines, 24 master’s degree programs in the first level disciplines and 151 other master’s degree programs. Among which, the university has competitive advantages in areas of Chinese Language and Literature, History, Management and Education, etc. The university has over 2,800 faculties, of which more than 1000 are holding senior academic or professional titles and more than 70% are Masters or Doctoral degree holders. There are more than 60,000 students of different types enrolled in the university, of which more than 21,000 are full-time students.

　The university attaches much importance to the education of international students and has abundant teaching resources in the teaching of Chinese language to speakers of other languages. It first started to admit international students in 1965 and has fostered more than 5,000 students. Currently there are about 5000 international students studying in the university. Actively engaging in international cooperation and exchange, the university has established friendly ties with more than 60 institutions and organizations in over 30 countries and regions, such as the USA, the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Xi’an, the capital of thirteen dynasties in the Chinese history, is ranked as one of the four great ancient capitals of the world with Athens, Rome and Cairo, and is also the starting place of the famous “Silk Road”. Xi’an has many historical and cultural sites such the Ming Dynasty city wall, the Forest of Steles, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Banpo Village Site, etc. The Qin Dynasty Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, dating back to more than 2,000 years ago and regarded as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, are an outstanding representation of Chinese civilization as well as a fine example of human civilization.     The university’s Yanta and Chang’an campuses cover an area of about 180 hectares or 445 acres. The elegant and beautiful Yanta campus and modern and grand Chang’an campus have been awarded the “Model Campus” in Shaanxi province. The Yanta campus is adjacent to the city’s subway station and the third-ring road and is only 40 minutes drive from the Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.
